SANDRA DAULTON SHAUGHNESSY

My clay experience began as a young woman in Iowa.
Currently, my clay work focuses on soda-fired functional ware.
I describe my clay work as “ceremoniously functional”, meaning that there is an element of ritual in using my handmade work. Many of my pieces have a soft altered quality that also expresses the softness of the clay and the atmospheric firing process. My studio work is an integral part of my life generating rhythm, expression, mindfulness and a never ending desire to create.
I sell and display my beautiful and distinct soda fired pottery at regional art galleries, exhibitions and fairs.
I’ll
I studied clay at the University of Northern Iowa, University of New Mexico and Eastern Michigan University achieving a MFA in ceramics in 1986.
I have taught clay classes at numerous art centers, universities and regional clay workshops. From 1998 to 2018 I was the Pottery Studio Supervisor and Exhibition Coordinator at Edina Art Center in Minnesota, where I also taught Advanced Soda-fired Pottery and Pottery for Intermediates. Currently I am a full time potter working at my studio, Clayhouse Pottery in Ottertail, MN, firing cone 10 soda. I also offer private lessons, and workshops and teach classes at the Northern Clay Center.
